Korean war and the 40 Steps, Busan 부산역사여행 40계단 기념관

처절했던 전쟁의 그 날 피란민들의 삶과 애환을 고스란히 담고 있는 곳, 전쟁을 통해 암울했던 시절, 그러나 희망을 버릴 수 없었던 피란민들의 삶을 40계단 기념관에서 볼 수 있다.
During the Korean war , which was the greastest tragedy in modern Korean history and irreversibly miserable, a total of about 1.6 million civilians and soldiers were sacrificed.
On that day of terrible war, the place where the lives and affection of refugees are intact,
But amid these dark days, there were those who could not give up dreams and hopes. Now I want to share their stories.

40계단 기념관은 부산 지하철 1호선라인 중앙역에서 하차후 40계단 테마거리를 걷다보면 문화회관을 볼 수 있다.
현재 동광동 주민센터 5~6층을 40계단 기념관으로 이용하고 있다.

The 40-step memorial hall can be seen as you walk through the 40-step theme street after getting off at Jungang Station on Busan Subway Line 1. Currently, the 5th to 6th floors of the Donggwang-dong Community Center are used as a 40-step memorial hall.

 

한국전쟁으로 인해 부산이 피란수도가 되면서 부산역과 부두로 수많은 피란민이 모여들었고 중구는 피란처의 중심지가 되었다. 당시 중앙동에서 대청로, 동광동으로 가는 지름길이었던 40계단은 구호물자를 내다 팔던 장터이자, 판자촌 언덕길로
이어지던 삶의 길목이었고 피란 중에 헤어진 가족을 기다리던 그 시절의 상징과도 같은 곳 이었다.

As Busan became the capital of refuge due to the Korean War, numerous refugees gathered at Busan Station and the pier, and Jung-gu became the center of the refuge. At that time, the 40 stairs, which were a shortcut from Jungang-dong to Daecheong-ro and Donggwang-dong, were a marketplace where relief supplies were sold.
It was a symbol of the time when they waited for my family who broke up during the war.

• 한국전쟁을 피해 부산으로 이동하는 피란민들

 

전쟁 발발 직후 피란민들이 부산으로 들이닥치자 부산시와 정부는 급한대로 부산시 전역에 40여 곳의 피란민 수용소를 만들었다. 하지만 수용소에 들어갈 수 없었던 피란민들은 빈 공터만 보이면 미군 부대에서 나온 상자와 판자 등으로 판잣집을 짓곤 하였다. 판잣집마저 없었던 피란민들은 다리 밑에 걸개로 잠자리를 만들거나 땅을 조금 파내고 각목이나 합판으로 벽을 만들어 움직을지어 생활하였다.

As refugees rushed into Busan immediately after the outbreak of the war, the Busan Metropolitan Government and the government urgently created more than 40 refugee camps throughout Busan. However, refugees who could not enter the camp used to build shacks with boxes and boards from U.S. military units. whenever they saw empty spaces.
The refugees, who did not even have a shack, , digging a little ground, and making walls of wood .

 

• 문화 Culture

이중섭을 비롯한 많은 문화예술인들은 광복동 일대의 다방과 극장에서 시화전, 미술전시회, 연극, 영화 등 다양한 활동을 하였다. 문인들에게 이곳은 외국 문화가 유입되어 새로운 세상을 경험 할 수 있는 접촉의 관문이었으며 지역예술인들과의 교류를 통해 새로운 문화예술 세계가 형성 되는 공간이었다.

Many writers and artists, including Lee Jong seop, did various activites, such as art exhibitions, plays and movies,
at coffee shops and theaters around Kwangbok- dong. For many writers, this place was the gateway to a new world
where foreign culture was introduced and where a new culture and art world was formed through exchanges with local artists.

• 교육 Education

 

부산 소재 학교와 피란 온 학교들은 구덕산 자락의 보수동 뒷산 등에서 노천교실을 열었다. 각급 대학은 전시연합대학 체제에 결합하여 수업을 이어갔다. 전쟁 중에도 활활 타올랐던 높은 교육열은 고도 경제 성장을 이루게 한 가장 큰 국가의 원동력 이었다.

Even when there were no houses to avoid the cold and rain and no food to eat, Koreans never stopped their education.
Refugee schools, as well as schools in Busan, opened open - air schools and classrooms. Also, variuos universities were combined into a wartime joint university system and taught students. This feverish desire for higher education during the war was the greatest driving force for Korean's high economic growth.

• 오늘날의 40계단 40 steps today

 

한국전쟁과 역전대화제(1953년 11월 27일) 의 아픔을 고스란히 품고있는 40계단은, 이제 문화와 예술의 거리로 변모해가고 있다. 예술의 멋을 가미한 40계단은 미래를 위한 문화관광테마거리로 거듭나고 있다. 근대의 상처와 아픔을 간직하면서도 '그래도 살아야겠다' 는 삶의 의지와 희망은 평화와 통일의 가치와 함께 40계단 층층대마다 스며들어있다.
Today, the 40 Steps have newly transformed into a cultural and artistic place. Based on the 40 Steps Cultural Tourism theme streets, 230 artists are engaged in artistic activities in various fields around the streets, creating art communities through particpaion by citizens, including flea markets and concerts.

부산여행 구도심 남포동, 국제시장, 깡통시장, 보수동책방골목을 돌아보고 부산의 역사를 더 깊고 자세하게 알 수 있는 40계단기념관을 둘러보는 것을 추천한다.
